Today, 2 April, 2024, marks exactly six years of the passing of Mama Winnie Mandela.

Today, we remember and honor the passing of an indomitable woman, who emerged as the Matriarch of the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. When Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years, Winnie gallantly stepped into the leadership role, becoming the driving force behind the movement.

Winnie faced immense challenges, enduring indignities, harassments, and multiple incarcerations for her leadership and activism. Despite the extreme challenges, she remained steadfast in her commitment to the cause of equality, freedom and justice. Indeed, Mama Madikizela remained unyielding to the very end.

The Stompie trial which sought to tarnish her reputation and legacy, ultimately proved to be built on trumped-up charges resulting in her acquittal and discharge.

Winnie’s resilience and determination in the face of enormous adversity continue to inspire generations in the ongoing struggle against inequality, oppression and injustice.

Today, we salute her enduring legacy and activism for a free and non-racial South Africa.
