Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the new Pope, taking the name Pope Leo XIV. The announcement was made by Cardinal Dominique Mamberti from the Loggia of Blessings with the traditional phrase “Habemus Papam,” meaning “We have a Pope.”
The election process involved a series of intricate rituals and ceremonies in the Sistine Chapel, where the Cardinals gathered to cast their votes. After receiving the required majority, Cardinal Prevost accepted his election and chose his papal name.
Following a brief ceremony in the Sistine Chapel, where he was greeted by the Cardinal electors, Pope Leo XIV delivered a greeting and imparted his first apostolic blessing, Urbi et Orbi, to the city and the world. The white smoke from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney earlier signaled to the world that a new Pope had been chosen.
