ACCRA, GHANA – Police are warning the public about a new car theft scheme targeting unsuspecting drivers at weddings and other social events. The robbers are exploiting the trust and urgency associated with public announcements to lure victims into a trap.

According to a recent alert from the Ghana Police Unit, thieves are now collaborating with event masters of ceremonies (MCs). The criminals ask the MC to announce a specific car’s registration number, claiming it’s blocking another vehicle. When the owner goes to move their car, armed accomplices are waiting outside.

The thieves, knowing the victim has the car keys, then force the owner to drive the vehicle out of the compound with them inside.

To avoid becoming a victim, police advise the public to be cautious if their car is announced at a function. They recommend taking your time before going outside and ensuring you’re not alone. The police also suggest confirming from a distance if your car is truly blocking another vehicle and checking if a driver is already in the supposedly blocked car.

Finally, they urge people to carefully watch their surroundings before approaching their vehicle.
