Ghana’s hosting of the 13th Africa Games has raised eyebrows due to the staggering costs associated with the event, totaling over $245 million. The expenses, which include $195 million for infrastructure, $15 million for athlete sustenance, and $48 million for operational expenses, have been justified by the Local Organising Committee (LOC). However, concerns over the management and allocation of funds have prompted calls for a parliamentary investigation.

Kofi Adams, the designated Minister for Sports and Recreation, has assured the public that the 9th Parliament is committed to addressing these concerns. The investigation will revisit discussions held in the previous Parliament and may retable the previous report or refer the issues to the appropriate committee for further examination.

The Forum for Accountable Governance and other organizations have also petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to investigate the financial expenditures surrounding the games. As the parliamentary investigation unfolds, the nation awaits the outcome, which could have significant implications for future sporting events in Ghana and the management of public funds.

The 13th Africa Games, held from March 8 to 23, 2024, featured 2,644 athletes from 53 countries, competing in 23 sports. The event was hosted in Accra, Kumasi, and Cape Coast, with the Borteyman Sports Complex being one of the main venues.
