The government and people of Burkina Faso have paid tribute to Ghana’s former President Jerry John Rawlings by renaming a major street in Ouagadougou as John Jerry Rawlings Avenue. The ceremony was attended by members of the Rawlings family, who formed part of the Ghanaian delegation.
The family of the late former President expressed appreciation for the recognition, describing it as “an honour not only to the family, but to the people of Ghana.” The Executive Director of the JJ Rawlings Foundation, Ms Yaa Asantewaa Agyeman-Rawlings, noted that the former President’s mission was rooted in the pursuit of justice and socio-economic liberation.
The street naming ceremony coincided with the official inauguration of a mausoleum in honour of Thomas Sankara, a close ally of Rawlings. The Burkinabe Minister for Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, Mr Gilbert Ouedraogo, praised Rawlings as “a great fighter for the emancipation of our continent” and acknowledged his support for Sankara.
A high-powered delegation from Ghana, representing President John Dramani Mahama, attended the inauguration, including Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, Defence Minister Edward Omane Boamah, and Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka.
