ACCRA – Dr. Johnson P. Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on Yagbonwura Bikunuto Jewu Soale I, the Overlord of the Gonja Kingdom, in Accra on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. The visit underscores the Bank’s commitment to fostering strong relationships with traditional leaders across the country.
During the meeting, Dr. Asiama expressed the Bank’s gratitude for the warm reception and extended a formal invitation to the Yagbonwura to attend the official launch of the Cedi@60 celebrations. This significant event is scheduled for Friday, August 8, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre.
“It would be an honour for the Yagbonwura to grace the occasion,” Dr. Asiama stated, highlighting the importance of traditional leadership in national affairs.
He further emphasized that the Cedi@60 celebrations, marking 60 years since the Ghana cedi replaced the Ghana pound as the nation’s sole legal tender, will serve as a crucial platform to reinforce the message that the Cedi is the only legal tender for all transactions in Ghana.
The broader Cedi@60 commemorative activities, which began in July and are set to continue through December 2025, aim to enhance public understanding of the currency’s history, promote its proper handling, and instill confidence in the national currency as a symbol of Ghana’s economic sovereignty and resilience.
