Billions Missing: Ghana’s Downstream Petroleum Industry Rocked by Embezzlement Allegations

Tensions are running high in Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry as allegations of embezzlement swirl around the Unified Petroleum Price Fund (UPPF). Industry players claim that a whopping 1.3 billion Cedis, accumulated over 16 months, has vanished into thin air.

Fingers are pointing at the UPPF Coordinator, Mr. Jacob Amuah, and some executive members of the Tanker Owners Association. The industry is demanding accountability and calling for a forensic investigation into the UPPF. The Coordinator’s defense? The money was shared among past top political heads of the National Petroleum Authority as a “thank you for work done” gift.

But that’s not the only red flag. The UPPF Coordinator was reportedly lobbying to become the Chief Executive of the Authority, despite failing to account for his stewardship. The aggrieved players are threatening to petition the Office of the Special Prosecutor and other authorities to investigate the alleged malfeasance and corruption.

As the drama unfolds, one thing is clear: the industry is fed up with the lack of transparency and accountability. It’s time for answers, and those responsible must be held to account.
