Bank of Ghana to Regulate Digital Credit Services

The Bank of Ghana has officially designated digital credit services as a non-bank financial service, bringing the burgeoning sector under its regulatory control. This is a strategic move, as outlined in Notice No. BG/GOV/SEC/2025/28, aimed at promoting financial inclusion and expanding access to the financial system for Ghanaians. By formalizing this service, the central bank seeks to establish a structured and secure environment for digital lending, which has become increasingly popular.

This new designation, however, does not serve as an automatic license for existing digital credit providers. The Bank of Ghana has made it clear that a new, more specific directive will be issued in the near future. This upcoming directive will detail the specific licensing requirements that all entities must meet to legally provide digital credit services, ensuring that only qualified and compliant operators are allowed to function in the market.

This decision marks a significant step toward creating a regulated and safer digital lending landscape in Ghana. By setting clear rules and standards, the Bank of Ghana can better protect consumers from predatory practices, ensure data privacy, and maintain stability within the financial sector. All stakeholders in the industry are advised to take note of this development as they prepare for the forthcoming regulations.
