Accra, Ghana – Chief Justice nominee, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has proposed the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into Ghana’s judiciary to improve the process of empanelling judges for cases. Speaking before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, November 10, 2025, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie emphasized that AI could significantly enhance fairness, transparency, and efficiency in assigning judges to cases, thereby boosting public trust in the judicial system.

“We should be able to consider empanelling an AI panel of judges. AI will be a very good thing for empanelling,” Justice Baffoe-Bonnie stated, highlighting the potential benefits of leveraging technology to streamline judicial processes. He noted that the current system sometimes raises suspicion and anxiety among litigants and lawyers regarding how panels are constituted, underscoring the need for a more objective and transparent approach.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s proposal comes amidst his vetting process, which follows the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, a move that sparked public debate and led the Minority in Parliament to boycott the vetting. The nominee’s suggestion has sparked interest in the potential for technological innovation to modernize Ghana’s judiciary and improve the delivery of justice.
