The Ashanti Regional Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has embarked on a three-year campaign to combat prostate and liver cancers, which have become major health concerns for men in the region. According to statistics, cancer cases in the Ashanti Region have been on the rise, with 8,764 cases recorded in 2022, increasing to 11,783 in 2023, and further to 12,817 in 2024.

Dr. Fred Adomako Boateng, the Ashanti Regional Director of Health, expressed concern that men are disproportionately affected by these cancers, with 3,200 new prostate cancer cases recorded between 2022 and 2024. This represents more than three times the number of cervical cancer cases recorded during the same period.

The campaign, which aligns with the World Cancer Day theme “United by Unique,” aims to raise awareness about prostate and liver cancers, promote early detection and prevention, and advocate for equitable patient support systems. Dr. Adomako Boateng emphasized the need for a human-centered approach to cancer care, which addresses the unique needs of each patient with compassion and empathy.

Men in the region have welcomed the campaign, noting that cancer advocacy has largely focused on women’s health issues. They recommended that the Health Service bring screening and advocacy efforts closer to communities, such as fitting shops, wood villages, and transport stations, to encourage more men to participate.

The three-year campaign will involve wide awareness creation and behavioral change campaigns, knowledge sharing and partnerships, promotion of national initiatives, and advocacy for equitable patient support systems.
