Asante Kingdom Buries Queen Mother in Historic Ceremony

Kumasi, Ghana – The Asante Kingdom is observing the final funeral rites for the late Queen Mother, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who passed away on August 7, 2025. The historic ceremony has brought together thousands of mourners and a host of prominent dignitaries at the Dwabrem grounds of the Manhyia Palace.

The body of the late queen mother has been lying in state, allowing for a four-day period of traditional ceremonies known as “Doteyie.” Among those who have joined the Asante people to pay their respects are President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, former President Nana Akufo-Addo, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Former President John Agyekum Kufour and businessman Freedom Jacob Caesar, also known as Cheddar.

The funeral, which began on September 14, is culminating today, September 18, with the final burial set to take place at a royal mausoleum in Breman. The solemn occasion has brought most business activities and public movement in Kumasi to a standstill, with a curfew in effect to ensure a dignified and orderly final passage for the revered royal.
Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the 14th Asantehemaa, reigned for eight years after ascending the stool in 2017. Her passing is considered a great loss to the Asante Kingdom, and her funeral serves as a powerful display of the kingdom’s rich cultural heritage and enduring traditions.

The ceremonies reaffirm the significance of the queen mother’s role as a key advisor and custodian of royal lineage within the Ashanti hierarchy.
