The office of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has issued a strong rebuttal against recent claims suggesting he attempted to influence either the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) internal primaries or the timing and proceedings of its upcoming National Delegates Conference. In a formal statement, the former President’s office firmly rejected the allegations, labeling them as “entirely untrue” and stressing that Akufo-Addo has made no effort, direct or indirect, to sway the party’s key organizational decisions.
The statement further provided context, noting that the former President has been out of the country and has not been in communication with NPP officials regarding any potential adjustments to party schedules or plans. Critically, the office dismissed the originators of these claims, describing the rumors as self-serving and asserting they are being circulated by individuals prioritizing personal gain over the collective interests and well-being of the NPP.
The focus is now shifting to the NPP’s Annual Delegates Conference, which is slated to take place at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium. This significant event is set to concentrate on a range of crucial matters, most notably several constitutional proposals. These proposals include key recommendations put forward by the Prof. Mike Oquaye Committee and updates that were initially discussed during the 2019 Kumasi conference.
Operating under the theme “Rebuilding Together with Our Values,” the conference is designed to serve as a platform for strengthening party cohesion, reaffirming the NPP’s foundational principles, and enhancing the organizational structures essential for preparing the party for future political contests.
In preparation for the meeting, Party leadership has emphasized the need for strict adherence to rules and order throughout the conference proceedings. To ensure a smooth and secure event, security arrangements have been meticulously coordinated between party personnel and national security agencies.
Delegates have been strongly urged to offer their full cooperation to facilitate an efficient and orderly meeting. While public discourse had recently been dominated by speculation surrounding early primaries and internal reform agendas, the former President’s clarifying statement aims to redirect the conversation back to the substantive objectives of the conference.
As the NPP convenes its delegates, attention will be fixed on how the party evaluates its past achievements, addresses current challenges, and strategically maps out the road ahead.
