Some residents of Akatsi in the Akatsi South Municipality of the Volta Region have blocked the Akatsi Tatorme to the District Assembly stretch of the Accra-Aflao highway.
This was after a speeding commercial ford transit vehicle with registration number GG 4257-19 knocked down a motor rider and his passenger in what they claimed was over speeding on the side of the driver of the vehicle on Sunday, March 14.
The angry residents expressed displeasure over the increasing road accidents on that stretch of the road.
According to them, the authorities of Akatsi South have failed to construct speed ramps at some vantage points of the town after several requests.
The residents said, the rate at which road accident is occurring in Akatsi township is alarming and called for urgent action.
Mr Edward Doe Adade, the Assemblymember for the area disclosed to the ModernGhana News that, the aggrieved residents have blocked the road because of the countless number of accidents that occurred on that part of the road.
He noted that all effort to get authorities responds to their calls of constructing speed ramps on the road have fallen on deaf ears.
Mr Adade urged the Municipal Assembly, the traditional authorities and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to wake up to the reality on the ground.
He also stated that the youth, particularly children and the aged are those at a higher risk.
According to him, Mawunyo Hude, a female apprentice lost her life at the same spot after a speeding vehicle knocked her down last year.
“The time for action is now so that drivers and road users would not be killing precious lives,” Mr Adade said.
ModernGhana News gathered that Mr. Anthony Klutse, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Tonny Ann group of companies, and the owner of Viva Vegus hotel closed to the Municipal Assembly made a request to the assembly for a permit to personally construct speed ramps on that part of the road to curb the vehicular knockdowns but no response was given since.
Chief Superintendent Joseph Atsu Dzineku, the Akatsi South Municipal Police Commander in interaction with the residents called for calm.
He assures that immediate actions will be taken by the authorities to construct some ramps to save the situation.
He added his men will continue their stay on the road to check over speeding on that part of the road until speed ramps are fixed.
Mr Leo Nelson Adzidoga, the Akatsi South Municipal Chief Executive called for calm as he assures them of the assembly’s effort to quickly put things in place to construct the speed ramps.
