In the aftermath of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) humiliating defeat in the recent presidential and parliamentary elections, former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko has embarked on an advocacy drive to reclaim the party from what he describes as “cabals” that have hijacked it.

Agyarko’s campaign, dubbed “Taking Our Party Back – Step One,” seeks to promote urgent, deliberate, and well-thought-out reforms to restore the party’s vision and unity. He has warned against knee-jerk reactions and emphasized the need to learn from the party’s history to avoid repeating past mistakes.

The former Energy Minister who is a leading member of the NPP, has identified two key issues that must guide the party’s reform agenda. Firstly, he has stressed the need for clear, thoughtful leadership, warning against placing total trust and confidence in a single leader. Secondly, he has called for the NPP to redefine its political organization, advocating for a party built on like-minded individuals working towards national development, rather than one controlled by a “cabal” seeking personal enrichment.

Agyarko’s advocacy drive comes after the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 elections, which has been attributed to poor leadership style by the current leadership. As a former presidential aspirant, Agyarko had withdrawn from the race in 2023, citing the party’s breach of its constitution. His current campaign is seen as a bid to reclaim the party and restore its vision and unity.
