A high-level delegation from the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) is currently in the Republic of Ghana on a promotional mission running from September 29 to October 2, 2025. The mission, carried out in conformity with Article 45 (1) of the African Charter, seeks to engage with relevant institutions to gather information on the country’s implementation of the Charter’s provisions and protocols, with the aim of assisting Ghana in its compliance as a State Party.
The delegation paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable James Gyakye Quayson (MP), to brief him on the Commission’s work and their objectives in Ghana, which include promoting the Charter, establishing collaboration and accountability mechanisms, and holding constructive dialogue with selected sectors.
The Commission lauded Ghana for its role as the African Union Champion for Gender and Development Issues and noted that the country has not been the subject of negative reportage concerning the issue of torture.
In response, Gyakye Quayson applauded the ACHPR for its role in promoting human rights across the continent and assured the delegation of Ghana’s full cooperation during the mission and beyond, including the sharing of best practices with other State Parties.
The delegation is composed of several key members, including the Vice Chairperson of the Commission, Commissioner Janet Ramatoulie Sallah-Njie, who serves as the Country Rapporteur for Ghana and the Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Women in Africa. Also present are the Chairperson of the Committee on Prevention of Torture in Africa, Commissioner Hatem Essaiem; the Chairperson of the Working Group on Extractive Industries, Environment and Human Rights Violations, Hon. Commissioner Solomon Ayele Dersso; and the Chairperson of the Working Group on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Hon. Commissioner Mudford Zachariah Mwandenga.
