A High-Level delegation from the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights has concluded a promotional mission to Ghana, apprising the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Honourable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, of their findings and stakeholder engagements. The delegation’s activities included meetings with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and visits to facilities designated for vulnerable people and those in conflict with the law.

The Commission commended Ghana for enacting various laws and programmes aimed at addressing human rights challenges and urged the government to ensure their full implementation. Conversely, the delegation identified certain gaps and offered recommendations designed to help the country achieve full compliance with the regional human rights instrument.

In response, Minister Ablakwa assured the delegation of Ghana’s full cooperation in fulfilling its obligations under the African Charter, reaffirming the nation’s commitment to upholding the rights of all persons. The Minister also highlighted the severe challenge posed by the illegal mining menace, or ‘galamsey’, noting that the issue has negatively impacted all sectors of the economy. He stated that Ghana is prepared to resolve the matter through a coordinated intersectoral approach and ultimately remains committed to building an inclusive and sustainable society.
