As Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, prepares to take on the role of Ghana’s Foreign Minister, he’s seeking guidance from those who have come before him. Ablakwa has been meeting with icons of Ghana’s Foreign Ministry, describing the experience as a “rare privilege” and “most illuminating period” of his life.

Recently, Ablakwa met with, Dr Obed Asamoah the longest serving foreign minister and now Ambassador James Victor Gbeho, a celebrated diplomat who served as Foreign Minister from 1998 to 2001. At 90 years old, Ambassador Gbeho is a treasure trove of wisdom, having also served as Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1980 to 1990.
Ablakwa also consulted with Prof. Kwamena Ahwoi, who served as Foreign Minister from 1997 to 1998. Prof. Ahwoi’s experience is particularly notable, as he took over from Dr. Obed Asamoah and handed over to Ambassador Gbeho. Before assuming the role, Prof. Ahwoi acted as Foreign Minister whenever Dr. Asamoah was indisposed, successfully balancing this responsibility with his Local Government ministerial portfolio.
Ablakwa feels “extremely blessed” to have received warm receptions and gracious guidance from these two icons of international relations, governance, and Pan Africanism. As he prepares to take on the challenges of his new role, Ablakwa is committed to upholding the standards set by his predecessors and serving Ghana with integrity.
