Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has reiterated his pride in leading a campaign against the use of chartered luxury jets for presidential travels during the Akufo-Addo administration. In a statement, Ablakwa emphasized that his actions were guided by national interest and a desire to protect the public purse.
The Minister on his social media platforms, highlighted that former President Akufo-Addo had previously criticized plans by President Rawlings to purchase a new executive jet in 2000, citing prioritization, prudence, value for money, and transparency concerns. He questioned why Akufo-Addo’s conduct in 2000 was commendable, while his own actions between 2021 and 2024 were condemnable.
The minister expressed no regrets for his oversight role, stating that his efforts led to the Akufo-Addo administration abandoning chartered luxury jets in its final year in office. Ablakwa also commended Akufo-Addo for resorting to using Ghana’s presidential jet, which he believes was fit for purpose.
Ablakwa’s statement comes amid calls for his resignation over perceived inconsistencies in his stance on presidential jet usage, particularly after President John Mahama reportedly used a private jet for a trip to Japan and Singapore.
