In a moment that has shaken the conscience of the nation, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has condemned a tragic shooting incident that occurred at its District Office in Garu, Upper East Region, on Monday, October 20th. What should have been a day of service and healing turned into a scene of horror, as unidentified gunmen on motorbikes opened fire on the facility and its surroundings.
According to the Upper East Regional Police Command, four lives were lost and five others injured in the attack. The NHIA, in a statement signed by Chief Executive Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, expressed deep sorrow and unwavering condemnation of the violence. “We are profoundly saddened that such an incident occurred at a facility dedicated to serving the healthcare needs of the public,” the statement read.
The Authority has dispatched a management team to Garu to support bereaved families, the injured, and affected staff. In addition, NHIA is working closely with the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies to ensure swift justice for the victims and accountability for the perpetrators.
In the wake of this tragedy, NHIA is reviewing security protocols across all regional and district offices to safeguard staff, clients, and property nationwide. The Authority urges calm and unity as investigations continue, reaffirming its commitment to the safety and wellbeing of all Ghanaians.
This incident reminds us that even institutions built on compassion and care are not immune to the violence that threatens our collective peace. Yet in mourning, we also remember our strength. Sankofaonline joins the NHIA and the nation in prayer and solidarity.
May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace. May justice rise swiftly. And may our resolve to protect one another never waver.
