The Bonsu Family of Chicago, together with the entire Okuapeman community, announces with deep sorrow the passing of a revered matriarch, Mrs. Charlotte Sophia Fianko Bonsu—affectionately known to many as Sisi or Teacher Awura. Her transition marks the end of a beautiful chapter defined by grace, service, and boundless love. She was the devoted mother of Chief Nana Yirenkyi Bonsu, the Okuapeman Chief of Chicago.

Born on September 28, 1938, in Kponkponso near Kwasi Diaka in Ghana’s Eastern Region, Mrs. Bonsu was the eldest of six children of the late Mr. Israel Debra Fianko and Mrs. Victoria Takyiwa Fianko. From her earliest days, she embodied a spirit of diligence and devotion. She received her teaching credentials from Krobo Odumase and Akropong-Akwapim, going on to educate generations of young minds at Akim Asafo Presbyterian Primary School with a steady hand and a nurturing heart.

Her life took a new turn in Kraboa Coaltar, where she met and married Mr. Jonas Yirenkyi Bonsu. Together they raised four children—Foster, Leticia, William (Chief Nana Yirenkyi), and Seth—laying the foundation for a family built on integrity, compassion, and community service. In December 1973, Mrs. Bonsu moved to Chicago to reunite with her husband, continuing her journey of learning and care. She pursued studies in Hotel and Motel Management, transitioned to healthcare, and furthered her love for child development at Kennedy-King College.

Mrs. Bonsu’s home in Chicago became a haven for many—a sanctuary where warmth radiated and generosity never ran dry. Known for opening her doors and heart to all in need, she epitomized quiet strength and kind hospitality. Her commitment to community extended far beyond her home: she was instrumental in supporting her husband’s civic efforts and played a founding role in the creation of the Okuapeman and Eweubi (Larteh) Organizations in Chicago.

In 2008, she entered retirement but remained active and joyful, investing deeply in the lives of her grandchildren. Her frequent travels to Ghana and North Carolina kept familial bonds vibrant and strong. Whether visiting museums or national parks, or sitting in quiet conversation with loved ones, she lived each day with purpose and grace.

On June 5, 2025, Mrs. Bonsu passed peacefully at Christ Advocate Oak Lawn Hospital, surrounded by her children. Her life, rooted in faith and service, reflected the virtuous essence described in Proverbs 31—a woman of substance, prayer, and unwavering generosity.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, her eldest son Foster W. Fianko, and her grandson Nana Yaw Oduro Fianko. Her legacy lives on in her children: Leticia Bonsu-Annor, Chief Nana Yirenkyi Bonsu, and Seth Fianko Bonsu. Their lives remain a reflection of the wisdom and love she poured into them.

Memorial and funeral celebrations will take place August 1–3, 2025, as friends, family, and admirers gather to pay tribute to a woman whose contributions to family, education, faith, and community will never be forgotten.

“Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord…for they will rest from their labor, and their deeds will follow them.” — Revelation 14:13

Farewell, Sisi. Damirifa Due. Deele. Onyame tswu wo kpere.
