The Thanksgiving Service held in his honor was led by Rev. Emmanuel Betson, Resident Pastor of the Ghanaian Community Church of Chicago, under the powerful theme: “Turning Sorrow into Joy.” With wisdom and grace, Reverend Betson reminded the congregation of John 16:20 (NKJV): “Most assuredly, I say to you that you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will be turned into joy.”

Reverend Betson concluded his sermon with a powerful reflection: “Just as a mother endures the intense pains of childbirth, only for her anguish to be replaced by boundless joy when she beholds her newborn, so too does sorrow transform for those who believe. Mr. Mintah’s passing is not an end, but a transition—his earthly mission fulfilled, his eternal joy begun. Christ assures us that grief is never the final chapter, but rather the pathway to divine reunion.”

A Man of Vision and Service

Throughout his life, Mr. Mintah was an architect of unity, tirelessly working to strengthen bonds within the Ghanaian community in Chicago. As a founding member of the Ghana Students Union, which later evolved into the Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago, he was instrumental in shaping initiatives that empowered Ghanaians abroad. His unwavering commitment to mentorship and cultural preservation ensured that future generations remained connected to their roots.

Among his many contributions, Mr. Mintah championed the training of Ghanaian youth in traditional dance, infusing celebrations—such as GhanaFest—with vibrant heritage and pride. His efforts in forming the Adinkra Association helped unite young Ghanaians, instilling a strong sense of identity and unity.

A Fitting Farewell

The service concluded with music that lifted hearts—Rose Amonoo’s stirring rendition of “Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah”, followed by the hymn “Captain of Israel’s Host and Guide.” As we laid Mr. Mintah to rest at Burr Oak Cemetry, we did so not in despair, but in gratitude for a life well-lived. His contributions have paved the way for future generations, ensuring his spirit will forever be a guiding light.

His Legacy Lives On

Yaw Mintah’s influence was profound, his love for culture unwavering, and his dedication to community unparalleled. As we grieve, let us also rejoice. His work will not be forgotten, and his vision continues in the hands of those he inspired.

Let us honor him, celebrate him, and continue his mission—for sorrow may visit us now, but joy surely follows.

May he rest in eternal peace.
