A critical second round of polio vaccinations is set to begin in Gaza on October 14, 2024, targeting 591,700 children under ten years yold with the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2). This follows a successful first round that vaccinated 95% of eligible children.
The campaign, conducted by the Palestinian Ministry of Health, WHO, UNICEF, and other partners, aims to stop the polio outbreak detected in July 2024. Vaccinations will occur in three phases, with vitamin A co-administered to boost immunity.
To ensure success, meticulous planning and coordination are in place, including mobile teams reaching out to families in shelters and camps. Social mobilizers and digital channels will raise awareness about the importance of the second dose.
However, logistical challenges and security concerns remain, emphasizing the need for humanitarian pauses to ensure safe access to vaccination.
