Kampala, Uganda – Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, joined other prominent African leaders yesterday to witness the Inaugural Sitting of the 5th Session of Uganda’s 11th Parliament. The session, overseen by Uganda’s Speaker, Rt. Hon. Anita Anette Among, signals the commencement of the final legislative period before Uganda’s next parliamentary elections.
Among the attendees were Speakers and presiding officers from Namibia, Congo, East African Legislatures, Kenya’s Senate, South Sudan, and the Leader of the West Africa bloc of the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS).
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni delivered the State of the Nation Address, as mandated by the 1995 Ugandan Constitution, detailing his government’s accomplishments. He presented visual evidence of progress in infrastructure, specifically road construction, and initiatives for food security. The President also highlighted improvements in healthcare, including research and service delivery, and innovations in science and technology, such as the export of Kirra electric cars. President Museveni thanked Parliament for its support, promised more developmental projects, and expressed confidence in his National Resistance Movement’s electoral performance while extending well wishes to all political parties.
Parliament is scheduled to begin debates next week, preceding the President’s budget presentation. Speaker Among praised the President’s support for the legislature and encouraged Members of Parliament to demonstrate patriotism and dedicated service.
During a dinner for visiting delegations, Speaker Bagbin, who also chairs the Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of African Legislatures (CoSPAL), called upon Uganda to maintain its commitment to African unity and socio-economic development, reinforcing Pan-African cooperation among nations.
