GOASO, Ahafo Region – President John Dramani Mahama has delivered a significant assurance to Ghana’s cocoa farmers, promising a “very, very, very good” increase in the cocoa producer price set to be announced in August. The pledge, made during his “Thank You” visit to Goaso in the Ahafo Region, signals a renewed governmental focus on revitalizing the nation’s struggling cocoa sector.

Addressing a gathering of chiefs and local residents, President Mahama revealed that the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) is finalizing the new price, which he anticipates will substantially boost farmers’ livelihoods. “To cocoa farmers, the Cocoa Board Chief Executive has informed me that in August, they will announce the new cocoa producer price, and I can assure you the price is going to be a very, very, very good price,” a confident Mahama stated.
Beyond the immediate price adjustment, the President also cast a wider net over agricultural transformation with the introduction of the “Feed Ghana Programme.” This ambitious initiative aims to propel the country’s agriculture into a modern, export-driven powerhouse. Highlighting Ahafo’s fertile lands, President Mahama underscored the region’s pivotal role in this program.

The comprehensive package for farmers under “Feed Ghana” includes a suite of benefits: targeted input subsidies, crucial mechanization support, and improved access to vital extension services. Furthermore, the program will see enhancements to warehouse and irrigation infrastructure, alongside support for young entrepreneurs in agro-processing through facilitated access to financing and specialized training.

President Mahama unequivocally declared agricultural self-sufficiency as a national imperative, stating, “Let me emphasize that food sovereignty is national security, and together, we will make Ghana self-sufficient in food production.”

The Goaso engagement concluded President Mahama’s three-day “Thank You” tour, which encompassed visits across the Bono East, Bono, and Ahafo Regions.
