Member of Parliament for Klottey Korley constituency, Dr. Zanetor Rawlings, has emphasized the importance of addressing mental health challenges beyond just gaming, highlighting addictions to substances, sex, and more as real struggles many young people face. She made the call at a Mental Health Awareness engagement hosted by the Gaming Commission at Accra Technical University in her constituency.
The event, which drew over 300 students from various areas of study, focused on the impact of sports betting and gaming on mental health. Dr. Rawlings stressed the need for genuine listening, noting that asking “How are you?” without waiting for a real answer can be insufficient. She encouraged people to pause, be present, and truly hear each other, emphasizing that sometimes, just listening can save a life.
Dr. Rawlings’ comments come as the country observes Mental Health Awareness Month. She urged people to make mental health conversations a part of their everyday lives, promoting a culture of understanding and support for those struggling with mental health issues.
