The World Health Organization (WHO) will host an online event on World No Tobacco Day, May 31, to expose the marketing tactics used by the tobacco and nicotine industries to lure children and young people into nicotine addiction. The event will feature global health leaders, government officials, youth advocates, and researchers discussing the appeal of nicotine and tobacco products.
Speakers include WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus and the Head of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, Dr. Adriana Blanco Marquizo. The event aims to reveal how flavors, additives, and product packaging are designed to attract new users and retain existing ones.
This year’s World No Tobacco Day campaign, “Unmasking the appeal: Exposing industry tactics on tobacco and nicotine products,” seeks to raise awareness about the industry’s tactics and advocate for stronger policies to protect public health. The WHO is pushing for a ban on flavors that make tobacco and nicotine products more appealing, particularly to young people.
The online event is part of the global efforts to highlight the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine products and the need for robust measures to curb their use.
