Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has taken steps to fulfill his campaign promise to enhance governance and accountability in Ghana. He met with civil society organizations to discuss the establishment of a Governance Advisory Council, an independent watchdog that will advise the government on human rights, corruption, and governance issues.

The council will comprise diverse stakeholders, including civil society, religious leaders, traditional authorities, academia, labor, and ordinary Ghanaians. According to President Mahama, the council is a commitment to the Ghanaian people, a promise to foster a more transparent and accountable government.

The Governance Advisory Council will produce an annual, publicly accessible report on the state of human rights, corruption, and governance in Ghana. This report will provide a comprehensive assessment of the government’s progress in these areas and serve as a benchmark for measuring accountability.

Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, Senior Presidential Advisor for Governmental Affairs, will lead the government’s efforts in establishing the council. The move demonstrates President Mahama’s commitment to strengthening governance and accountability in Ghana, and his administration’s willingness to engage with civil society and other stakeholders to achieve this goal.
