In the United States, Mother’s Day is more than just a date on the calendar—it is a heartfelt tribute to the women who shape lives, nurture families, and inspire communities. Every Second Sunday in May, churches across the country are filled with worshippers, as even the occasional churchgoer feels compelled to attend, pray, and celebrate the incredible mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters who bring light into their homes.

For many, Mother’s Day is a joyous celebration of life, love, and the extraordinary journey of motherhood. Husbands honor their wives with admiration, proudly proclaiming, “She is a wonderful mother to our children.” Others bask in the warmth of family traditions, describing the day as nothing short of magical. Yet for some, Mother’s Day carries bittersweet emotions—a time to cherish memories and honor the mothers, wives, and sisters who are no longer with them.

Amidst this blend of emotions, the Ghanaian immigrant community in Chicago embraces the day with faith and festivity. The Church of the Ghanaian Community of Chicago, a non-denominational congregation, ensures the occasion is nothing short of remarkable. The women’s ministry, as is customary, leads the charge, orchestrating a service where every aspect—from the preaching to the readings and announcements—is handled exclusively by the women, creating an atmosphere of grace and empowerment.

Meanwhile, the men’s ministry finds unique ways to celebrate the women in their lives. This year, in a touching display of appreciation, every woman in attendance was presented with a delicate red rose flower, a symbol of love and admiration, along with thoughtful packets of chocolates—a sweet gesture to mirror their warmth and kindness.

Her powerful message, themed “The Oil That Never Stops”, was deeply rooted in scripture, drawing inspiration from 2 Kings 4:1-7 and Proverbs 31:10-31. With eloquence and conviction, she recounted the biblical story of the widow who, faced with the loss of her husband and the impending fate of her two sons being taken by debt collectors, turned to the prophet Elisha in faith. By following his divine guidance, she filled jars with oil—an act of obedience that not only saved her family but also demonstrated the power of unwavering belief and resilience. Sister Rosemary’s words resonated deeply, reminding the congregation that, like the widow’s oil, a mother’s strength and love are infinite.

As the service concluded, attendees gathered for a feast that delighted the senses and stirred nostalgia. Plates overflowed with fufu and light soup, banku with rich okro stew, waakye infused with fragrant spices, and other traditional Ghanaian delicacies—a taste of home that bound the community in joy and camaraderie.
