In his first address to the College of Cardinals, Pope Leo XIV has outlined his vision for the Church’s response to the challenges posed by artificial intelligence and the digital revolution. The Pope explained that his chosen name, Leo XIV, is inspired by Pope Leo XIII, who addressed the social question in the context of the first industrial revolution.

Pope Leo XIV stated that the Church must respond to the new industrial revolution and developments in artificial intelligence, which pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice, and labor. He emphasized the Church’s enduring commitment to human dignity and social justice, drawing on the legacy of both Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIII.

The Pope paid tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis, remembering his simplicity, dedication to service, and peaceful return to the Father’s House. He called on the Church to treasure the legacy of Pope Francis and to continue on the path set in motion by the Second Vatican Council, which was renewed and reinterpreted under Pope Francis.

Pope Leo XIV highlighted key themes from Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii gaudium, including the primacy of Christ, synodality, and care for the poor. He concluded his address by calling on the Church to continue on this path with “prayer and commitment,” quoting Saint Paul VI’s prayer for a “great flame of faith and love” to spread across the world.
