
A four-day anti-illegal mining operation in the Western Region has resulted in the arrest of 47 suspects, including 39 Ghanaians and 8 Chinese nationals. The operation, which began on April 17, 2025, in the Samreboi enclave, also led to the recovery of 17 excavators, 1 bulldozer, 4 motorbikes, and 2 Toyota Hilux vehicles, among other equipment.
Five weapons, including four pump-action guns and one single-barrel gun, were also recovered. 41 suspects have been put before court, with 29 remanded into police custody and 12 others remanded to reappear on May 2, 2025. The remaining six suspects will also face court proceedings.
In a related development, the Police Administration has reshuffled some commanders in galamsey areas to inject fresh energy into the fight against illegal mining. The reshuffle affects some Divisional and District Commanders in the Eastern, Western, and Western North Police Regions.
