The Minerals Commission is set to introduce a nine-year limit on prospecting licenses in Ghana to promote accountability and active engagement in the mining sector. According to the Commission’s CEO, Martin Ayisi, Ghana is one of the few African countries with no limit on prospecting licenses. The proposed limit aims to ensure companies work on their licenses instead of holding them indefinitely.

The Commission plays a crucial role in regulating and managing Ghana’s mineral resources. It receives and processes applications, authorizations, and permits for mineral exploration and extraction, and recommends policies to the government. The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has the sole authority to grant, revoke, and approve mining rights, but can only act on the Commission’s recommendations.

The Commission’s efforts to promote responsible mining practices include prioritizing local content by awarding mining-related services to Ghanaian companies. However, in cases where local capacity is lacking, the sector may be opened to external providers. Ayisi emphasized that the Commission is committed to ensuring Ghana remains a leader in responsible mining practices across the continent.

The proposed limit on prospecting licenses is part of a broader effort to regulate the mining sector. Ayisi noted that mining in Ghana requires four key authorizations, including a mining lease and environmental permit. Operating without necessary permits is considered illegal mining, and the Commission is working to combat this issue. The government is expected to take action soon to address the ongoing problem of illegal mining, particularly in water bodies.

The Minerals Commission’s commitment to responsible mining practices was highlighted during a webinar on “Responsible Mining – Compliance, Licensing, and Sustainability.” Ayisi assured the public that the Commission will continue to promote sustainable mining practices and ensure accountability in the sector.
