Ghana’s Energy Commission is cracking down on charcoal producers targeting the export market, requiring them to obtain a license with final approval from the Commission’s Board. This move aims to promote sustainable charcoal production and ensure only legally sourced charcoal enters the export market.
Senior Manager for Renewable Energy Regulations at the Energy Commission, John Yeboah, revealed that rigorous inspections will be conducted at charcoal production sites to verify the source of feedstock used in production. Licenses will only be granted to producers sourcing feedstock from approved plantations allocated by the Forestry Commission.
Although formal regulations on charcoal production are still under development, the Commission has established clear guidelines for export purposes. This development underscores Ghana’s commitment to responsible forestry practices and sustainable energy production.
