John’s tenure as Vice President of the Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago (GNC) marked an era of transformative progress. Serving alongside then-President Clement Timpo, he witnessed and contributed to the council’s evolution, including the transition from the Secretary General model to the Presidency. Demonstrating tireless dedication, John often stepped in to take minutes during meetings and took the reins when enthusiasm waned among members to organize Ghana’s Independence celebrations. His efforts, along with others, ensured the success of the event, with proceeds earmarked for a future Ghana House to serve the community.

An Advocate for Justice and Progress

Mr. Abbeyea’s contributions extended to advocating for fairness and equity on multiple fronts. In a bold act of diplomacy, John and others passionately stood at the forefront of a petition that influenced the Rawlings government to reject a controversial proposal from the U.S. government to relocate medically experimented laboratory chimpanzees to Ghana. He personally delivered the petition to the Rawlings government in Accra. This act exemplified his unwavering dedication to protecting Ghana’s interests and dignity.

John also represented the Ghanaian community in Chicago during significant moments, including meetings at City Hall with Mayor Daley to foster relationships between the African diaspora and city leadership. His presence at such forums served as a voice for Ghanaians and Africans, ensuring their concerns and aspirations were heard.
