Mass Polio Vaccination Campaign Underway in Gaza Strip

In a concerted effort to combat the ongoing polio outbreak, a mass vaccination campaign is currently underway in the Gaza Strip. From February 22 to 26, 2025, over 591,000 children under 10 years old will receive the novel oral polio vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) to protect them from the debilitating disease.

The vaccination drive follows the detection of poliovirus in wastewater samples in Gaza, indicating ongoing transmission in the environment. This poses a significant risk to children, particularly those with low or no immunity. The current environment in Gaza, characterized by overcrowding in shelters and severely damaged water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure, creates ideal conditions for the virus to spread.

Despite the challenges, two previous vaccination rounds in September and October 2024 successfully reached over 95% of the target population. However, additional efforts are necessary to strengthen population immunity and reach every child. The recent ceasefire has improved access for health workers, enabling them to reach previously inaccessible areas.

The upcoming campaign aims to close immunity gaps and end the outbreak. An additional vaccination round is planned for April. The Palestinian Ministry of Health is leading the campaign, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and other partners.

Polio vaccines are safe, and there is no maximum number of times a child should be vaccinated. Each dose provides additional protection, which is crucial during an active outbreak. The WHO, UNICEF, and partners welcome the recent ceasefire and urge for a lasting peace to ensure the health and wellbeing of children in the region.
