Ghana’s Shippers Authority CEO, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has accused some international shipping lines of resisting government efforts to regulate them. However, Gyampo assures that this resistance will soon be a thing of the past, as the government prepares to introduce a legislative instrument (LI) to bring these shipping lines in check.
The CEO’s concerns extend beyond regulation, as he highlights the prohibitively high cost of doing business in Ghana. This has led some businesses to threaten relocating to more cost-effective countries. Gyampo attributes some of these costs to deliberate incompetence, aimed at increasing demurrage fees.
The Ghana Shippers’ Authority has been working to address challenges faced by traders and shippers. Established 50 years ago, the authority aims to regulate commercial activities of shippers and shipping service providers ². With the government’s impending legislative instrument, Ghana may soon see a more regulated and cost-effective business environment.
