President John Dramani Mahama has paid a heartfelt tribute to Sam Nujoma, the founding President of Namibia, who passed away at the age of 95 in Windhoek. Mahama’s emotional message celebrated Nujoma’s remarkable contribution to Namibia’s liberation and Africa’s broader fight for freedom and dignity.
“Liberation Comrade, you have truly fought a good fight, and now is the time for the faithful soldier to lay down his arm and take a rest. Namibia is truly grateful to you, and Africa is truly grateful to you for the dignity and freedom we enjoy as a people. Rest in peace, soldier, Sam Nujoma. Long live Africa and Namibia solidarity”.
Nujoma’s legacy as a freedom fighter and statesman is undeniable. He led the fight for independence from South Africa in 1990, after helping found Namibia’s liberation movement, the South West Africa People’s Organisation (Swapo), in the 1960s. He served as President of Namibia from 1990 to 2005, leaving an indelible mark on the country’s history.
Mahama’s tribute is a testament to the profound impact Nujoma had on Africa’s struggle for liberation and self-determination. As the continent continues to grapple with the challenges of freedom, dignity, and development, Nujoma’s legacy serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of perseverance, courage, and solidarity.
