Dear Mr. Afenyo-Markin,

I hope this letter finds you well. I have read with concern your recent statement in Parliament that Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta is traumatized and will return to cooperate after treatment. While it is important to address Mr. Ofori-Atta’s health, we must also consider the immense pain and suffering he has inflicted on millions of Ghanaians through his financial malfeasance and economic mismanagement.

The haircut on pensioners’ savings and other financial malfeasance under Mr. Ofori-Atta’s watch have led to untold hardship, even resulting in deaths. It is unconscionable to prioritize one individual’s trauma over the collective agony of a nation. As a leader, you have a responsibility to apologize to the millions of Ghanaians who have suffered and died as a result of these actions.

I urge you to use your leadership of the micro minority caucus to call on Mr. Ofori-Atta to return to Ghana to face justice, as former Deputy Finance Minister Victor Selormey did. Justice must be served, and Ghanaians deserve closure and accountability. The precedent set by Omaru Diko, who was brought to face justice, should serve as a reminder that no one is above the law.

The Dikko Affair: A Tale of Audacious Political Kidnapping

In 1984, Umaru Dikko, a former Nigerian government minister, was living in exile in London after being accused of embezzling billions of dollars from the Nigerian treasury. The new military regime in Nigeria, led by Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, wanted to bring him back to face charges. In a joint operation with the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, Nigerian agents kidnapped Dikko and drugged him before placing him in a crate labeled as a diplomatic bag. The plan was to secretly transport him back to Nigeria. However, the plot was foiled when the crate was discovered at London’s Heathrow Airport, and Dikko was rescued by British authorities. This incident, known as the Dikko Affair, caused a significant diplomatic rift between Nigeria and the United Kingdom and remains one of the most audacious political kidnappings in modern history.

Here are some suggestions and recommendations for moving forward:

  1. Issue a Public Apology: Acknowledge the suffering caused by Mr. Ofori-Atta’s actions and apologize to the victims and their families.
  2. Call for Transparency: Demand full transparency and accountability in all financial dealings to restore public trust.
  3. Promote Rule of Law: Ensure that all individuals, regardless of their status, are held accountable for their actions.
  4. Encourage Cooperation: Urge Mr. Ofori-Atta to cooperate with the authorities and return to Ghana to face the charges against him.
  5. Strengthen Oversight: Advocate for stronger oversight and regulatory measures to prevent future financial mismanagement.

By taking these steps, you will demonstrate your commitment to justice and the rule of law, and help restore the confidence of the Ghanaian people in their leaders.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I look forward to seeing decisive action taken to address these critical issues.

Sincerely,
Retired Senior Citizen
