Ghanaian diplomat Amma Adomaa Twum-Amoah has been elected as the African Union Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs, and Social Development. This decision was made at the 46th ordinary session of the executive council of the African Union, paving the way for high-level engagements at the African Union Summit of Heads of States and Governments in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Currently serving as Ghana’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Twum-Amoah brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Her diplomatic career spans various roles within Ghana’s foreign affairs department, including Minister/Head of Chancery of the Embassy of Ghana in Washington, D.C., and Minister-Counsellor and acting High Commissioner at the Ghana High Commission in Canberra, Australia.

As the African Union Commissioner, Twum-Amoah will play a crucial role in addressing the continent’s migration crisis. The African Union is currently developing an action plan to implement the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM) in Africa. This plan aims to provide a harmonized approach to migration governance across AU member states.

Twum-Amoah’s expertise will be invaluable in expediting this plan, which will tackle the complex challenges of migration in Africa. With tens of thousands of migrants embarking on perilous journeys each year, her leadership will be crucial in finding solutions to this pressing issue.
