In the wake of a meningitis outbreak in Ghana’s Upper West Region, Member of Parliament for Nabdam, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, is pushing for free treatment for suspected cases. As a medical doctor and MP, Dr. Nawaane understands the devastating impact of the disease, particularly among low-income families who struggle to afford treatment.
With 23 suspected cases and four deaths reported as of February 9, 2025, the situation is dire. Dr. Nawaane emphasizes that poor nutrition, poverty, poor hygiene, and poor accommodation exacerbate the spread of meningitis. He also notes that many patients cannot afford medication, even after treatment has begun.
Dr. Nawaane’s plea for free treatment is not just a humanitarian appeal; it’s also a pragmatic solution to prevent further outbreaks. He stresses that delayed reporting and self-medication allow the infection to spread, making treatment more challenging.
The MP’s call to action comes as the government institutes measures to curb the outbreak. With eight districts now reporting suspected cases, the need for swift action is urgent. Dr. Nawaane’s advocacy for free treatment is a crucial step in addressing the crisis and saving lives.
