Ahmed M. Gedel Writes:
The hallowed halls of Ghana’s Parliament have witnessed their fair share of heated debates and impassioned exchanges, but the recent behavior of Minority leader, Hon. Afenyo Markin, has raised eyebrows and sparked concern. His actions, marked by unbridled outbursts and a seeming disregard for parliamentary protocol, have brought into question his fitness to lead and the very integrity of the institution.
Afenyo Markin’s troubles began when he launched a scathing attack on Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, accusing her of partisanship and alleging that she was working in favor of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). The outburst, captured live on television, sparked a brawl among committee members, forcing a halt to the vetting process that day. This incident was not an isolated one, as Afenyo Markin has been involved in controversy before, making a comment about the running mate of former president John Mahama, Naana Jane Opoku
Agyemang, which generated immediate controversy in parliament.
However, it was his subsequent actions that have drawn the most ire. Despite having agreed to the vetting of Health Minister designate, Kwabena Minta Akandoh, Afenyo Markin inexplicably backtracked, breaking their arrangement and ordering his MP, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, to disrupt the vetting process. This directive was also implemented by Nsawam Adoagyiri MP, Annor-Dompreh, who instructed all their MPs to remove and overturn tables at the hearing.
Such behavior is unbecoming of a leader and has no place in the revered institution of Parliament.
The fallout from Afenyo Markin’s actions has been swift and severe. He now faces the Privileges Committee, which will determine whether his behavior constitutes a breach of parliamentary etiquette.
The Minority leader’s refusal to apologize to the Clerk has only exacerbated the situation, leading many to question his commitment to upholding the dignity of the institution.
As the drama unfolds, one cannot help but wonder what the future holds for Afenyo Markin and the parliamentary opposition. Will he find a way to redeem himself, or will his actions prove to be a permanent stain on his legacy? One thing is certain, however: the eyes of the nation are upon him, and the consequences of his actions will be far-reaching.
