The vetting of President Mamama’s nominees has been nothing short of a political spectacle. The NPP members of the vetting committee seem to be doing themselves and their party a significant disservice. Their line of questioning, particularly their engagements with Honorable Sam George and Honorable Okudzeto Ablakwa, has inadvertently yielded political dividends to the NDC. The responses from these two stalwarts of the NDC were reminiscent of the fiery and compelling responses young Jerry John Rawlings gave to the military court martial, which won him the hearts of his colleagues and Ghanaians alike.

Honorables Sam George and Okudzeto Ablakwa

For instance, when Honorable Sam George was asked if he still stood by his assertion that President Nana Addo Danqua Akuffo Addo stole the public purse, his response was nothing short of electrifying. Almost every Ghanaian is aware of the looting of coffers and land, which led to the massive vote against the NPP. This question and Sam George’s response only served to highlight the NPP’s shortcomings and gave the NDC an unexpected boost in public perception.

It appears that the current NPP party leaders have not learned from the reasons why Ghanaians voted against them in such large numbers. Their behavior and reactions, which led to the breaking of equipment during the vetting and the subsequent sanctions from the Speaker of Parliament, speak volumes to Ghanaians. It suggests that this group of NPP leaders is more focused on defending their interests and looting rather than caring for the people of Ghana.

The vetting process has become a stage for political theatrics, with the NPP members seemingly unprepared for the articulate and passionate responses from the NDC nominees. This has only served to highlight the NPP’s shortcomings and has given the NDC an unexpected boost in public perception.

As the vetting continues, it remains to be seen whether the NPP will adjust their approach and focus on the issues that matter to Ghanaians. For now, the NDC seems to be winning the battle of public opinion, thanks in no small part to the missteps of the NPP vetting committee members.
