A heated clash erupted in Parliament between the Majority and Minority groups during the vetting of Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The tension began when the Minority requested to reschedule the vetting to Friday, January 31, citing inadequate planning. However, the Majority refused to budge, insisting that the session continue as scheduled.
The disagreement escalated into chaos, with Minority members disrupting proceedings by breaking tables and microphones. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin accused the Clerk of the Appointments Committee, Gifty Jiagge-Gobah, of bias towards the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). Afenyo-Markin claimed that the Clerk scheduled the vetting without prior agreement and supports the NDC, even advertising their events.
Despite the disorder, the Majority initially insisted on continuing the vetting. However, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga eventually intervened, announcing that the vetting would be suspended and rescheduled for Friday, January 31.
The clash highlights the deepening rift between the Majority and Minority groups in Parliament, with accusations of bias and partisanship flying back and forth. As the vetting process resumes, it remains to be seen how the two groups will navigate their differences and work towards a more constructive dialogue.
