In a bold move to tackle Ghana’s long-standing problem with illegal mining, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has issued a stern warning to Members of Parliament (MPs) involved in galamsey. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, January 28, Bagbin emphasized that any legislator caught engaging in illegal mining will face severe consequences.
Galamsey has ravaged Ghana’s environment, destroying water bodies and forests, despite efforts by past governments to curb the practice. The Speaker’s warning comes amid reports that some MPs and government officials have either engaged in illegal mining themselves or protected those who do.
Mr. Bagbin urged MPs to lead by example and avoid any involvement in illegal mining. “Honourable members, galamsey must be confronted head-on. If any of you is involved, please advise yourself. We must be ready to take tough action,” he cautioned.
The Speaker’s strong stance highlights the urgent need for leaders to take responsibility and fight galamsey to protect Ghana’s environment. With his warning, Bagbin has sent a clear message that MPs will be held accountable for their actions, and that the era of impunity is over.
