In a move to fulfill his 120-day Social Contract with Ghanaians, President John Dramani Mahama has announced a seven-member National Economic Dialogue Planning Committee. The committee, chaired by renowned economist Dr. Ishmael Yamson, is tasked with organizing the National Economic Dialogue (NED), a platform for discussing Ghana’s development challenges and building consensus on reforms.

The NED aims to achieve three key objectives: communicating the true state of Ghana’s economy, developing a homegrown fiscal consolidation program, and highlighting essential structural reforms and policy priorities. To accomplish this, the committee has four weeks to submit a report outlining tasks such as agenda setting, speaker coordination, logistics management, session facilitation, documentation, and communications planning.

The committee members bring a wealth of expertise to the table, including Dr. K.Y. Amoako, a development economist and former Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA); Professor John Gatsi, Dean of the School of Business at the University of Cape Coast; and Mohammed Samara, an infrastructure and investment strategist.

The National Economic Dialogue is expected to provide a platform for dialogue and consultation on Ghana’s pressing development challenges, discussing policy trade-offs and building consensus on reforms needed to transform Ghana into a high-growth, inclusive, and resilient economy.
