Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, reaffirmed the legislative body’s role as the voice of the Ghanaian people. This declaration came during a courtesy call from a six-member delegation from the University of Media Arts and Communication, led by Prof. Christiana Hammond, Rector of the Institute of Journalism.

Speaker Bagbin emphasized that Parliament represents the voice of the people, particularly in jurisdictions that prioritize this voice, such as the Commonwealth. He also highlighted the crucial role of political communication in Parliament’s business, noting that the institution has made efforts to educate new Members of Parliament in this area.

To enhance communication and citizen participation, Parliament has implemented reforms, including splitting the Public Affairs Department into three departments: Media Relations, Public Engagement, and Parliamentary Broadcasting. Furthermore, the University of Media Arts and Communication seeks to collaborate with the Parliamentary Training Institute to offer programs in Effective Political Communication, enabling Members of Parliament to obtain diplomas and degrees.

This initiative aims to bolster the capacity and skills of Members of Parliament, enabling them to communicate effectively with the citizenry. By strengthening the link between Parliament and the people, Speaker Bagbin’s vision promotes a more responsive and accountable democratic system.
