In the wake of a tragic incident in Obuase that claimed nine lives, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence among youth in the region. Dwumfour labeled this trend as an unacceptable threat to Ghana’s democracy, emphasizing that such actions undermine societal stability and national progress.

Dwumfour’s statement underscored the crucial role of responsible media practices in shaping public perceptions and behaviors. While acknowledging the challenge of directly linking a controversial video to the violent actions in Obuase, he condemned the video’s content as “vile, repugnant, malicious, outrageous, and lawless.” Dwumfour urged media outlets to refrain from promoting harmful content that could incite further unrest.

The GJA President called for collective efforts among journalists and media professionals to uphold ethical standards in reporting. He stressed the media’s vital role in fostering peace and understanding within communities, particularly during crises. Dwumfour reaffirmed the GJA’s commitment to defending media freedom while denouncing media irresponsibility.

Dwumfour encouraged his colleagues to remain vigilant against sensationalism and prioritize accurate, constructive information dissemination. This approach, he argued, is essential for nurturing a well-informed public capable of engaging in meaningful dialogue about pressing societal issues.
