President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his government has successfully averted the looming threat of power outages, commonly known as “dumsor,” just 16 days into office. This achievement comes after the previous administration failed to ensure a smooth-running energy sector, neglecting to arrange sufficient fuel for thermal plants.
According to President Mahama, the challenges inherited from the previous government were addressed through decisive action, stabilizing the energy sector and ensuring uninterrupted power supply. The government began delivering fuel to thermal plants in the east ahead of the scheduled shutdown of the West Africa Gas Pipeline (WAPCo), which supplies significant gas to Ghana’s eastern region.
During the swearing-in ceremony for six newly approved ministers, President Mahama emphasized the importance of a stable energy sector. The six ministers include Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson (Finance), Dr. Dominic Ayine (Attorney General and Minister of Justice), John Jinapor (Energy and Green Transition), Mr. Haruna Iddrisu (Education), Eric Opoku (Food and Agriculture), and Governs Kwame Agbodza (Roads and Highways).
President Mahama’s swift action has brought relief to Ghanaians, who have previously experienced frequent power outages, especially during the 2015 crisis, which was attributed to the country’s generating capacity and breach of contract obligations to external partners.
