Ahmed Ibrahim, Minister-Designate for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, has pledged to improve the property rate collection policy to generate funds for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 21, 2025, Mr. Ibrahim said property rate collection is a means to generate revenue at the district level. He plans to decentralize the system, enabling assemblies to undertake collections.
Mr. Ibrahim noted that previous attempts to centralize the system failed, and it was returned to the MMDAs. He said the system will be decentralized to enhance the capacity of MMDAs.
