As President-elect John Dramani Mahama prepares to form his cabinet and make appointments to other vital positions, it is imperative that he looks deep within himself and carefully analyze who truly fits these crucial roles at this pivotal moment in the nation’s history.

Over the years, we have witnessed ministers and office holders from both major parties. With few exceptions, many of these individuals have merely occupied their offices without making significant contributions. Their tenure often leaves little to be remembered or celebrated. Moreover, their true character often reveals itself in office, marked by arrogance, a lack of ethics, and poor human relations. We have seen ministers who freely give out their contact information to constituent members, only to ignore calls and messages from these people later. Why offer your number if you have no intention of responding? These office holders, who should be the face of the government, behave as if Ghanaians owe them something.

This time around, we urge President-elect, John Mahama , to ensure that his cabinet ministers and other appointees are held to the highest standards. Here are a few key expectations for good office holders:

  1. Human Relations: Office holders must exhibit excellent interpersonal skills, treating every citizen with respect and dignity. They should be approachable and responsive, fostering a sense of trust and collaboration.
  2. Ethical Conduct: Integrity and transparency should be the cornerstones of their service. They must adhere to the highest ethical standards, avoiding any form of corruption or misconduct.
  3. Accountability: Office holders should be accountable for their actions and decisions. They must be willing to answer to the public and take responsibility for their performance.
  4. Visionary Leadership: They should possess a clear vision for their respective roles, with innovative ideas and strategies to drive progress and development.
  5. Dedication and Patriotism: A genuine commitment to the nation’s welfare is essential. Office holders should prioritize the country’s interests above personal or political gains.

We urge the President-elect to implement a robust oversight mechanism for his cabinet ministers and appointees. One strike, and you’re out. This is not the time for individuals to toy with the Ghanaian experiment. We are at a crossroads where failure is not an option. Over 30 million Ghanaians are looking up to you, Mr. President-elect. Whether NDC, NPP, or any other party member, we all recognize that we are on the brink of losing control of our own affairs. In general , we have failed ourselves since the birth of this nation. As the beacon of the continent, we urge you to take unprecedented steps to lift up this nation. Political favors should be a thing of the past. Ghanaians have placed their trust in you to do the job. It will not be easy, given the challenges at hand, but with God and the people of Ghana on your side, we SHALL OVERCOME!
