As the National Democratic Congress (NDC) prepares to take the reins once again, it’s crucial to reflect on the challenges that lie ahead. The incoming administration, led by John Mahama, faces a myriad of issues that require immediate attention and strategic solutions. Here’s a detailed look at the pressing problems:
- Economic Crisis: Mahama is inheriting an economy that has struggled to honor its domestic and foreign debt obligations. The financial instability has far-reaching implications, affecting everything from public services to international relations.
- Energy Sector Debt: The infamous “Dumsor” (power outages) was a direct result of a staggering $2.5 billion debt in the energy sector. This debt not only disrupted daily life but also hampered industrial productivity and economic growth.
- Food Supply Failures: The inability to pay food suppliers led to a dire situation where we couldn’t feed our school children, resulting in 20,000 bags of food going to waste. This highlights the critical need for better financial management and support for essential services.
- Educational Shortcomings: For six years, school children were deprived of textbooks, severely impacting their education and future prospects. This neglect underscores the urgent need for investment in educational resources and infrastructure.
- Delayed Examination Results: The release of BECE (Basic Education Certificate Examination) results was delayed due to indebtedness, causing anxiety and uncertainty among students and their families. Timely financial interventions are necessary to prevent such disruptions.
- NABCO Arrears: Workers under the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) were owed eight months of arrears, reflecting the broader issue of unpaid wages and financial mismanagement. Ensuring timely payments is essential for maintaining morale and productivity.
- Bank of Ghana Losses: Over a span of just two years, the Bank of Ghana recorded losses exceeding 70 billion cedis. This financial hemorrhage needs to be addressed through stringent fiscal policies and oversight.
- COCOBOD Losses: The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has recorded losses for seven consecutive years, threatening the livelihood of cocoa farmers and the economy at large. Revitalizing this sector is crucial for economic stability.
- Nonfunctional Tema Oil Refinery: The Tema Oil Refinery remains nonfunctional, exacerbating the country’s dependency on imported fuel and straining the economy. Revamping this facility could significantly boost local production and reduce costs.
- Water Shortages: Widespread water shortages across the country highlight the need for improved water management and infrastructure. Access to clean water is a fundamental right that must be prioritized.
- Depleted Forest Reserves: Illegal mining activities have led to the depletion of our forest reserves, causing environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity. Strict enforcement of environmental regulations is necessary to protect these vital resources.
- Polluted Water Resources: Similarly, illegal mining has polluted water resources, posing serious health risks to communities and wildlife. Immediate action is required to clean up and safeguard our water bodies.
- A Call for Confidence: Despite these challenges, there is no need to panic. Mahama and the NDC have a track record of addressing complex issues and can do it again. With strategic planning and decisive action, they can steer the country towards recovery and growth.
As the NDC steps into leadership, the road ahead is fraught with difficulties. However, with determination and effective governance, these problems can be tackled, paving the way for a brighter future for Ghana.

This people has finished Ghana, and God will judge each and everyone of them.
My goodness. These problems are so humongous. I hope that Mahama spells all these out to the nation during his first address to the nation. NPP bankrupt the country and running away with no shame.
